What do you want to hear? Usually what we want to hear is not what we need to hear. And often we are not good at hearing the very things that may help us to turn a corner.
A father disciplines a child. A boss tries to correct an employee. A wife corners a husband. On and on the scenarios go. We humans prefer to hear what we want to hear instead of what we need to hear.
This is true in church as well. Many members wish to hear words that make them happy. Few wish to be challenged. But the greatest battles in life are won when we face a challenge and overcome.
Some wise person once described the job of a pastor as this: to comfort the afflicted, and to afflict the comfortable.
Church should challenge us. Do not resist forces that call you to a greater life. Do not shy back from that which you would prefer not to hear. They may just be the words that change your life for the better.
It's a beautiful day in God's world, be sure to see the good.
