Swahili



A book was written in Swahili to the Zula nation in Africa. We pick it up and read it and ask ourselves what does it mean. And we interpret it based on our English language or American heritage and our experience of the American life. With no concept whatsoever of the language of Swahili or the history of the Zulu people. How is that even right? How can this even be the case? What if we started over and said let’s learn the language of Swahili. Let’s learn the culture of the Zulu people. It might enhance our understanding of this book that has come to us.

That is what we do with the Bible. A book written by Jews to Jews, set in the culture of the Hebrew people. We pick it up with no knowledge of their culture and imprint our own ideas onto it.  We even arrogantly argue and insist that our interpretations are right.  How insightful it would be if we could know what they know about the setting and history around the Bible.

And so I hold out to you the BEMA podcast. These guys do an exceptional job of explaining scripture through the Jewish lens. They have given me a whole new outlook on Genesis 1, Revelation, and the book of Romans. I encourage you to give the podcast a try.
