thoughts on generosity

In working on the sermon for last Sunday, I ran across this list of types of generosity. Ways and reasons that people are generous...


Generosity

1. Type one... giving so that you will be noticed or appreciated. A terrible kind of generosity. Especially when Jesus said to keep your giving in secret. Don't let your left hand know what your right hand is doing.

2. giving so that you will not feel bad…. Gosh, everyone else is doing it. Everyone else is making a commitment. It's a good cause. I don't want to feel bad, let's join in. We have to keep up with the Jones's

3. type three is giving because it feels good, giving because you want to. This is almost always done in secret. Ahh, the joy of giving. Good giving. The way it ought to be done.

4. Type 4 is that selfless giving where you don't even realize that it is amazing. You have done it for so long that it is just a part of who your are. You are doing good and you don’t even know that you were doing it.

examples...
being friendly, kind
paying for lunch
loaning something to someone
spending your time
saying please and thank you
going the second mile.

I was hungry and you fed me.  I was thirsty and you gave me a drink.  When did we do such things?

May we all strive to be so generous that it just becomes a natural part of our every day living.
