something beautiful

Sometimes things in our lives get messed up.  They get wrecked.  This post is just a reminder that things don't have to stay wrecked forever.

I posted a few weeks ago about how sad we were that our big beautiful palm tree was killed by an infestation of beetles.  I had to take it down and take it out.  Funny as it sounds, we were sad about it.  It was a beautiful tree.

The canary island date palm died.

Our yard had a very sad spot.

Then there was planning and working.  We wanted to make it better.  I came up with a new idea.  I moved the stone border.  I planted anew.  Sometimes when life hurts, you have to get up and start again.

Left to right... foxtail palm.  Hawain T's [pink] Dark red crotans.  Yellow crotans.  Christmas palm.

And what was dead has come back to life.  What was a sad corner, is now again a happy sight.

And so it can be in other areas that are ravaged by the difficulties of life.

It's a beautiful day in God's world, be sure to see the good.

thoughts on generosity

In working on the sermon for last Sunday, I ran across this list of types of generosity. Ways and reasons that people are generous...

Generosity

1. Type one... giving so that you will be noticed or appreciated. A terrible kind of generosity. Especially when Jesus said to keep your giving in secret. Don't let your left hand know what your right hand is doing.

2. giving so that you will not feel bad…. Gosh, everyone else is doing it. Everyone else is making a commitment. It's a good cause. I don't want to feel bad, let's join in. We have to keep up with the Jones's

3. type three is giving because it feels good, giving because you want to. This is almost always done in secret. Ahh, the joy of giving. Good giving. The way it ought to be done.

4. Type 4 is that selfless giving where you don't even realize that it is amazing. You have done it for so long that it is just a part of who your are. You are doing good and you don’t even know that you were doing it.

examples...
being friendly, kind
paying for lunch
loaning something to someone
spending your time
saying please and thank you
going the second mile.

I was hungry and you fed me.  I was thirsty and you gave me a drink.  When did we do such things?

May we all strive to be so generous that it just becomes a natural part of our every day living.

It's a beautiful day in God's world, be sure to see the good.

Too Tribal

Today my Kansas City Chiefs will play the Baltimore Ravens for the right to go to the Super Bowl.  I am a big Chiefs fan.  I was born in Kansas City at St. Luke's hospital, back when there was only one... on the Plaza.  I lived 46 of my 66 years in KC.  I am a Chiefs fan.

But, I think that we are too tribal.  We get overly upset if our team loses.  Our egos rise and fall on the success or failure of our teams.  Life is bigger than football.

Today I will root for the Chiefs.  But if the Ravens win, I will be happy for Raven's fans.  It is ok for us to be happy for other people.  It is not always about me/us.

Having said that, GO CHIEFS!!!

It's a beautiful day in God's world, be sure to see the good.

When all else fails

When I was a kid, may dad always told me to read the directions.  When I was a teen-ager and later even as a young adult, my dad would remind me to read the directions.

Dads have good advice.  I wish my kids thought so...

Anyway, the other day I was spraying some window sealant, expanding foam around an air-conditioner that we had installed.  The directions said to wear gloves.

Wear gloves.  Why?

I thought to myself, "I am not going to get very much on my hands, and what little I do, I will wash right off in the sink."

Well, I ended up with a good amount of it on my hands... and then I went to the sink... I squirted some soap on my hands and washed it all up.  What I was actually doing was smearing the sticky substance all over my hands.  Wringing them over and over, I unintentionally got the goop all over my hands.  And let me tell you, it is not letting go.

This is after an hour of trying to get the stuff off!!!

Read the directions.  Pay attention to the directions.  There are other people in this world that know more than you do Jeff.

It's a beautiful day in God's world, be sure to see the good.

The Human Body

The other day someone saw me walking and was concerned that my knee replacement did not go well.  I told them, "no, things are fine.  things are much better."  The reason that I was walking funny is because of the general miles, wear and tear on this body.  It always takes me a few steps to get going.

Especially if I have sat for a while, the first few steps just get the juices going again.

I remember complaining to my dad when I was in my 20's about aches and pains.  He laughed.  He said, "son, when you are in your 20's you hurt yourself and it doesn't even hurt.  In your forties when you hurt yourself it hurts.  When you get to be my age [60's] you don't even have to do anything and it hurts."

As I think about this and write about this, I am reminded of what a miracle the human body is.  A few years ago, one of my favorite pastors was giving a sermon on miracles.  He admitted that there were a few miracles in the bible that he wasn't sure about.  And then, pointing to his chest he said... "this is a miracle... this heart... it has been beating every day for 74 years."

Wow.  The human body is a miracle.  Even if it takes a few steps to get it going.  We have much to be thankful for.

It's a beautiful day in God's world, be sure to see the good.

Bomb Shelters

When I was a kid, we lived on the corner of 96th and Walnut.  One of our neighbors, who was involved in the construction industry, had a bomb shelter installed in their yard.

This was the 1960's and we were in the middle of the cold war.  Everyone was worried about the Russians bombing us.

My friends and I used to open the hatch to the bomb shelter and climb down inside.  It was in essence, a big metal can.  It had an air vent and shelves for food.  The thing that I remember the most is how damp and musty it smelled.  We never stayed down there for very long.

Looking back on it now, what were the people thinking?  The whole neighborhood will be blown up, but we can survive down here and then later emerge to a nuclear winter?

Fear causes people to do funny things.  Resist fear.  Trust in God.

It's a beautiful day in God's world, be sure to see the good.

We don't know

There are many things that we don't know.

One of the funny things, ironic things about this discussion is that often do not know what we don't know. The amount of things that we don't know is a big body of ideas. It is at least much bigger than we think.

As sure as we would like to be about ideas in this world, ideas about politics and ideas about God, we just don't know.  We are just not as smart as we think that we are.

The awareness of this should make us humble.

And in relation to people… everyone’s behavior makes sense if you have enough information.

It's a beautiful day in God's world, be sure to see the good.

Why Methodists don't rebaptize

Last week at church we had a "remember your baptism" time in the service.  I thought it was great.  If you are unfamiliar with this opportunity, it is a time to put your hands in water, place the water on your forehead and remember, and be thankful.

One person, coming through the line said, "but I don't remember my baptism."

They were missing the point.

The point of baptism is that you offer yourself, or you are offered by your parents unto the Lord.  It is a sign that you are a part of his kingdom.

Baptism does not wash away sins.  Baptism is not primarily about a person's decision.  It is not about the amount of water.  It is a sign of the kingdom.

If it were about our decisions or our memories or our feelings, we would be getting re-baptized over and over.  In fact, I know many people who have done exactly that.  They have been baptized over and over, every time that they made a knew commitment or got a new understanding.  In effect, they made it all about themselves.

At some point, we need to just believe that God's grace is present in our baptism, we need to remember that  and be thankful.  If we can't do that, we are sentencing ourselves to a lifetime of guilt over whether or not we did it right, and re-baptism after re-baptism.

Let's just believe that God was there.  Let's just believe that the faith of our parents and the faith of the community were there.

Remember your baptism and be thankful.

It's a beautiful day in God's world, be sure to see the good.

What just happened

Last Sunday after leaving church, something strange happened.  When I leave church I always drive to 7th street and turn right.  Then I drive on 7th to "G" street.  There, I turn right and drive down the hill to the corner of US 1 and G.  I  stop at the light and wait to turn left onto US 1 for my drive home.

But last week when I got to the corner of G and US 1, something odd happened.  After sitting at the light for a few moments, my brain said, "go."  I started to go.  Just then, I noticed that cars were still flying through the intersection going north and south on US 1.  I looked at my light.  It was red.

The light was red, but my brain told me to go, and I started to.  I was very close to driving out into traffic causing certain harm to me and to others.

I cannot explain what happened.  I guess I need to pay better attention.  Red is red and green is green.  Be careful out there.  There are lots of older drivers in Florida that do not pay attention.  Evidently, I can be one of them.

It's a beautiful day in God's world, be sure to see the good.

Watching the news

I don't remember a time in my life when I have watched the news with such concern.

I have lived through some difficult  times... my childhood upbringing... breaking away from a cult...

But, what I consider the worst of times, I have never seen.  I have never lived through anything like the great depression.  I have never seen massive soup lines.  I have never witnessed hyper inflation.  I have never lived during a world war.

And yet, I watch the news these days and I am concerned:  Russia invading Ukraine.  Russia taking over part of Georgia.  Israel and Hamas.  Israel and Hezbollah.  The Houtis vs the US Navy.  Iran and Pakistan.  Iran vs everyone.

Maybe I just don't remember, but it seems like some pretty concerning times.

If you are concerned about what you read on the news, here is my advice.  1.  get out of debt and stay out of debt.  2.  be a positive voice in the world whenever and wherever you can.  3.  Trust in God.  He still has the whole world in his hands.

It's still a beautiful day in God's world, be sure to see the good.

I was touched

After the sermon on Sunday, our pastor took us through the communion liturgy.  Then we all got in line to receive the elements.

On a side note, I love to receive communion, more so than presiding over the liturgical end of it.

So I was in line with everyone.  The line is long.  All the way to the back of the Sanctuary.  As I waited and slowly moved towards the front, I noticed one of my friends take the elements and move over to kneel at the rail.  Most people take the elements and return to their seats, but this friend has been struggling with cancer.  He wanted a few moments to pray.   I watched as he knelt down and as our Pastor went over and placed a prayerful hand upon his shoulder.  It was so touching.  It was a picture of love.  It was a picture of grace.

May we all reach for each other in every chance that we get.

It's a beautiful day in God's world, be sure to see the good.

emotional reset

I thank God for the gift of emotional reset.  It is like our hearts/minds and bodies can only take so much sorrow.  Then our system clicks over to a better feeling.  I have experienced this from time to time over the years and I hope that you do as well.  I just don't think that we can bear the deep emotions on and on and on... so from time to time, our emotions must reset.

So I went to a funeral.  It was a big deal. Every funeral is a big deal I guess especially to the family and loved ones of the deceased. But when it’s someone that we knew well and loved it’s a big deal to us, and it hurts.  I dreaded going.  I worried about going. I hurt for the loss of this family that I love. I cried during the funeral I was somber the entire day.

Then I went to bed and woke up the next day. Thank God for the gift of waking up the next day. It doesn’t lessen the loss. But the gift of sleep broke the emotional cycle and I woke up the next day with a happy heart.  Happy for the gift of life and for the gift of my friend's life.

If you are in an emotional down spot, may God grant you an emotional reset.  May you have a good night's sleep so that you can wake and see that life is still good, and God is still with us.

It's a beautiful day in God's world, be sure to see the good.

A First

It was a first for me...

One of the normal ushers was sick on Sunday.  The head usher asked me to help.  Of course I said yes.  Glad to help.

I smiled.  I realized that in all of my years of participating in church services, I had never ever been a part of receiving the morning offering.

I ended up on the center aisle.  As I walked down the aisle with the plate, I smiled at every person.  I greeted them.  One person apologized for not having anything to put in the plate.  I touched her arm and told her that it was ok.  It was a beautiful experience.

Seemingly mundane moments can be made beautiful if we simply stop and appreciate them.

It's a beautiful day in God's world, be sure to see the good.

What to talk about

What will we talk about.  What should we talk about.

Sometimes we worry about how an encounter with a person will go.  How will they be?  What will I say?  What will we talk about.

I was visiting with a friend and we agreed that there is never a need to worry about what the conversation will hold.  We can talk about anything, or nothing.

I think the sign of a truly remarkable relationship is when you can just hang with someone and nothing needs to be said.  We are comfortable in the silence.  Sitting in silence is a message of comfort and trust.

I hope that you have some friends that you can talk with and that you can just sit with.  No words are required.

It's a beautiful day in God's world, be sure to see the good.

Gift Giving

I had breakfast with a friend a few weeks ago.  We discussed gift giving.  They had a plan that I thought was pretty cool for gifting for children or grandchildren.

She always gives...

  • One thing that you want
  • one thing that you need
  • one thing that you wear
  • and one thing that you read

My best advice on gifting, is to give and ask for the gift of time.  My daughter Jennifer, for Christmas gave me a gift certificate to a restaurant that we both like.  The card made it clear that this would be for just the two of us to spend some time.  Oh! The gift of time!

It's a beautiful day in God's world, be sure to see the good.

Identifying Cults and High Control Churches

I am providing this information because I talk to so many people who are stuck in, or are recovering from highly controlling churches...  Dr. Steven Hassan has developed the BITE method of determining if a church is a cult, or getting close to it.

B = Behavior control

I = Information control

T = Thought Control

E= Emotional Control

The BITE Method consists of four major methods of control: Behavior control, Information control, Thought control, and Emotional control. By exerting all four of these types of control, a church or cult can gain full power over a human being and essentially strip them of their free will. There is quite a bit of overlap between these four categories as, for example, our behavior is often dictated in part by our thoughts and emotions; however, by controlling these four areas of someone’s life, you can sever their ability to think for themself.

Behavior Control
Behavior control has to do primarily with restricting and controlling the physical movements of a human being. It’s essentially telling someone, “Go here. Don’t go there.” Cults seek to control who their members live with and associate with, hoping to keep people apart who might share similar dissenting ideas. They also seek to control who you have a relationship with or who you have sex with (probably because they’re afraid that a happy relationship might fill the emotional hole that that person was trying to fill by joining a cult).

Information Control
Successfully brainwashing people necessitates that they don’t have access to information that is contrary to the teachings of the group. In a general sense, this means deliberately withholding information from the cult members, distorting the information so that it’s more in keeping with the ethos of the cult, and systematically lying to cult members.

In its practical applications, information control is carried out by restricting members’ access to television, newspapers, or other media outlets, cutting off their contact with people outside of the cult, and distributing information sources approved by the cult. Cults also encourage their members to spy on each other, creating a sort of buddy system to ensure that no one is consuming outside information.

Thought Control
While behavior control and information control are methods of control imposed by the cult itself, thought control is where members start to internalize the teachings of the cult and impose them on themselves. A huge part of getting people to think in the way you want is to stop them from thinking in contrary ways.

In fact, cults often encourage (though not by name) thought-stopping techniques, meaning techniques that shut down the process of questioning. Activities like chanting, speaking in tongues, singing, humming, dancing, and praying become substitutes for questioning one’s reality, encouraging people to never allow “negative” thoughts into their minds.

In these ways and through the entire atmosphere of the cult, they seek to instill a black-and-white way of thinking into their members. Anything that is in agreement with the cult is good, and anything contrary to the cult is bad and should be avoided or even destroyed.  Questions are not allowed.

Emotional Control
In a similar way to how cults teach that certain thoughts are bad, they also teach their members that they must do away with certain emotions. Emotions like restlessness, doubt, homesickness, or anger can cause cult members to dissent, and so cults do everything in their power to eliminate those emotions in their members.

The primary way that cults control people’s emotions is through fear. If you fear the outside world, why would you ever think of leaving the cult? If you fear that you will never find happiness or salvation if you don’t follow the teachings of the cult, why would you ever doubt?

Another way that cults manipulate people’s emotions is by convincing them that all of their problems are their own fault and never the fault of the leader or the group as a whole. By doing so, they instill a sense of self-loathing in their members that causes them to seek the help of the cult to fix their “wretched” ways.

Final thoughts... it is important to remember that these methods aren’t only used by the Branch Davidians and the Manson Family, they can be found in corporate cultures, frat houses, churches, sports teams, and all over the world.

It's a beautiful day in God's world, be sure to see the good.

I thought

I thought that they didn't like me.

Years ago they left the church.  I worked so hard to keep people connected that it hurt when they left.  Especially really good people.

I guess yes, there were some folks over the years that were hateful, and if they left the church I didn't worry about it.  But when good people left, it hurt and I felt as if I had let them down.  Maybe I did.

One of the things that I have loved about the churches that I have served is that they were always good at welcoming people back.  People that returned after a long absence, or after a church change, were always welcomed and never shamed.

That is how it ought to be.

Anyway, I hear of a family that has returned to WCC.  That is awesome.  Another friend that I lost has evidently been reading the blog and contacted me.  That made me feel really good.  [and unfortunately we humans have a way of making it all about me.]

Anyway, work hard to keep your friends.  Work hard to keep your church friends and members.  Welcome them back of course if they leave and want to return.

And if you are thinking that it is time to follow the bread crumbs back to your home, follow that leading.  Home is where you will find the love after a long journey.

It's a beautiful day in God's world, be sure to see the good.

God is with us

It is reported that John Wesley [the founder of Methodism] that his last words as he passed were, "the best that we know is this... that God is with us."

Last week I sat in a funeral.  The day was filled with grief.  So many of my friends with swollen eyes and heavy hearts.  And I had this thought... "God is with us."

In our grief, God is with us.  On our good days, God is with us.  When we are not paying attention, God is with us.  When we don't believe in him, God is with us.  Simply put, it is a pretty good and pretty comforting truth... God is with us.

Where ever you are, who ever you are, what ever you are doing, what ever you do or do not believe, please know that you are not alone.  You are never alone.  God is with you.

God is with you.

It's a beautiful day in God's world, be sure to see the good.

Fighting depression

Little d depression. Many of us get it. It isn't any fun. Big D Depression. Fewer get it, but it can be very debilitating. I talk to people all of the time who are dealing with one form or another of depression. Here are some suggestions if you are struggling..........

8 keys to fight depression

1. You may feel overwhelmed by many difficult things in your life. Agree that most of them will be there tomorrow. Make peace with that. Focus your efforts on one of the issues. Work on it until it is resolved. Then move on to the next. One thing at a time.

2. Listen to soothing music. Classical music or Fernando Ortega or whatever you love. Music calms the savage beast. It speaks to our souls.

3. Diversion. Go to a movie. Go occupy your time. Give your brain a break by force filling it with something.

4. Read something helpful. Try the book, "Walking on Water" by Anthony Demello. It really helped me during a very little d depression time.

5. Spend time with Christian friends. Surround yourself with positive, helpful, constructive people.

6. Get outside and take in some of God's creation. let the sun, the moon, the air, the wind, the trees speak to you of the glory of God. Get outside of the four walls and let the heavens declare the glory of God.

7. Exercise. Go for a walk. Start a mild calisthenic work out. It is amazing how much better a person feels when they are exercising even a little bit. It is a giant stress reliever. This might be the first thing that you try.

8. Pray. There are some things that we can do, and there are some things that God can do. Do everything that you can, but ask for the help of our loving Father.

It is a beautiful day in God's world. Keep looking for it. You will find it. You will see it. The goodness of God is here.
