I was watching a show last week and two people had this exchange.
"I know how you feel."
"No, you don’t know how I feel."
"OK, you’re right, but I can imagine how you feel."
I have to tell you, there are some situations where I cannot imagine how you feel. I hurt for you and I can't fathom it. It is ok to admit that we can't understand a persons situation. But what we can do is hurt for them and hurt with them.
As I have said many times, there are way too many pat answers delivered in difficult situations. Sometimes, almost always, the best thing that we can say to a hurting person is "I love you, I'm sorry and I am here for you."
It's a beautiful day in God's world, be sure to see the good.
