Ireland

On July 13th, a group of us will be heading to Ireland
for some sightseeing.  If you have not been to
Ireland, it is a beautiful and amazing country.  There is so much to see.  Ancient castles, amazing churches, quaint towns, gorgeous scenery and so much more.

I have enjoyed our trips together over the years:  Italy, Ireland, cruises and the Holy Land.  I am not sure how many more there will be.

Anyway, if you would like to join in on the Ireland trip, here is the link.  I would love to spend some time with you in this beautiful country.  let me know if you have any questions.

Here is the link to the brochure:

the mirror

I looked in the mirror the other day. Or should I say I passed by a mirror and accidentally got a glancing view.

What I saw horrified me. I saw an old guy. He looked like my Dad. I saw aged skin, hair loss and general fatness.

I was disgusted. I am no longer young and beautiful [if I ever was]. I am an old disgusting looking person. Now there are some old folks that look good, but I fear that I am not one of them.

Then I stopped and remembered that there are people that know what I look like and still love me. They don’t see what I see. They see something good. They see something kind. They see the good.

Hey! Isn’t that what this blog is about? Seeing the good?

Next time you look in the mirror and you don’t like what you see, remember that there are a lot of people that love you, just the way you are.

Next time you are with a friend, tell them how beautiful you think that they are. Tell them that you love them, just the way that they are.

It's a beautiful day in God's world be sure to see the good.

on being yourself

There is an old saying: "be yourself, everyone else is already taken."
This saying encourages us to be
comfortable in our own skin.  We are invited to be authentically ourselves.  Might as well, who else can we be?  But some people do try, they do pretend.  There is no reason to pretend.  Be yourself, everyone else is already taken.

A friend sent me another saying that they came across:  "be yourself, they are going to judge you anyway."

Very interesting thoughts here.  Whether you try to pretend you are something that you are not, or if you are just your self, someone will judge you.  So if we are going to have people point the finger and judge us, why not just be ourselves.  It is exhausting to try and be someone else.

People won't always like who you are or what you do.  But you can only be you.  Be you and relax in the you that you are.  It is ok.

It's a beautiful day in God's world be sure to see the good.

Are we supposed to get what we want?

From my friend Pat-

I was thinking about the prosperity gospel the other day. ( I know, why on earth was I doing that when I could have been listening to the impeachment hearings). As I understand it, the prosperity gospel goes like this: if I obey God, as told to me by the minister (and maybe if I mail in a donation), I will be rewarded with good things in this life: Prosperity will come my way.  (Is this how I win the lottery or my team - Go Chiefs!-wins the Super Bowl?) What about the other guy going to a similarly oriented church who happens to be a 49er's fan or who also buys a lottery ticket. Or my opponent in my next jury trial.  And if they win and I lose, do I stop believing? Or do I just need to donate more?

When I contemplate the life of Christ, I realize that He was obedient: in the garden the night of his arrest He tried to find a way out of his commitment. He asked for someone else to take his place (take this cup from me). He really did not want to endure the next 48 hours of his life. (The anti-prosperity gospel: obey and you will suffer)

But He obeyed. The next 48 hours were pretty bad, no terrible. Shoot, they even stole his clothes.

Christ’s life, his message is not about how to get more for you. Rather, His example shows a better way for all of us to live together. The notion of getting more for me because I attend the correct church and publicly proclaim my church’s political or religious perspective seems more like the guys who grabbed Christ than those who were walking with him as disciples. Think about it..

Now about Sunday’s game.....

It's a beautiful day in God's world be sure to see the good.

It’s our moments of struggle that define us. It’s how we handle them that matters

Why are we here? What is our business?

"Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy."
- Matthew 5:7

In Charles Dickens Christmas classic, A Christmas Carol, Ebeneezer Scrooge is visited by the ghost of his old business partner Jacob Marley...  It is a pretty frightful moment for Scrooge.

Jacob Marley: I wear the chain I forged in life! I made it link by link and yard by yard! I put it on of my own free will and by my own free will, I wore it!

Ebeneezer: But it was only that you were an honest man of business!

Jacob Marley:  “Business!” cried the Ghost, wringing its hands again. “Mankind was my business. The common welfare of all people was my business; charity, mercy, forbearance, and benevolence, were all my business. The dealings of my work were but a drop of water in the comprehensive ocean of my business!”

Dear Friends... this Christmas, and all through the year, may we remember that Mankind and Womankind, Humankind is our business.

"Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy."
- Matthew 5:7

Merry Christmas!

Ahh.

Now there are two special words... Merry Christmas.  When said appropriately, they are words that are filled with joy and good wishes for the recipient.

Sometimes we feel the Christmas spirit and some times we don't.  But if I get the chance to say Merry Christmas to you, I want you to know that I am feeling real, true warm hearted sentiment for you and yours.

Today and all through the coming year, may you sense the joy and hope that God sends our way.

MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!

the birth vs. the death and resurrection

I grew up in a world where the main point of Christianity was the death and resurrection.  We were saved by that.  The birth was just a cute, true but cute story.  The cattle are lowing and all of that.

Not to diminish the death and resurrection, but I have come to believe in my old age that the birth sends a very powerful message as well.  Maybe more powerful.  For without the birth, there would be no life, no death and no resurrection.

So what is the message of the birth?

In sending Jesus to be born on this earth God said, "YOU ARE WORTH IT!!!"  "YOU MATTER!!!"  "I LOVE YOU!!!"

This Christmas, hear the message.  God so loved the world.  You were worth it all.  YOU were worth it!   You are loved, and nothing can take that away.

YOU MATTER!!!

It's a beautiful day in God's world be sure to see the good.

too much kindness

Someone commented to me the other day that I write a lot in my blog about kindness.

Hmmm... I'm not sure what to say to that.  Do you mean that I write too much on kindness? Is that even possible?

Kindness kindness kindness kindness kindness kindness kindness kindness kindness kindness kindness kindness kindness kindness kindness kindness kindness kindness kindness kindness kindness kindness kindness kindness kindness kindness kindness kindness kindness kindness kindness kindness kindness kindness kindness kindness kindness kindness kindness kindness kindness kindness kindness...

I remembered an old story about a pastor who got up for the sermon and said one word.  He said, "Love."  Then he sat down.  There is nothing else.

kindness kindness kindness kindness kindness kindness kindness kindness kindness kindness kindness kindness kindness kindness kindness kindness kindness kindness kindness kindness kindness kindness kindness kindness kindness kindness kindness kindness kindness kindness kindness kindness kindness kindness kindness kindness kindness kindness kindness kindness kindness kindness kindness kindness kindness kindness kindness kindness kindness kindness kindness kindness kindness kindness

If we get kindness right, we have everything right and if we get kindness wrong, we have everything wrong.

unequal charity

From my friend, Pat.  I love this!!!

I have a friend, a good friend, no a lifelong friend. Over the years, he’s been broken, disappointed, abandoned, injured and I’ve been there. Over the years I’ve been broken, disappointed, abandoned, injured, but I can’t say I’ve heard from him much.

This lack of balance, used to bother me. But I realize it was because I was doing good deeds because I expected something back: good deeds. Really, life never works that way, and discovering this gave me a whole new perspective on interacting with others. We all believe that we should get good treatment from our friends when we are in need. Sometimes we do, more often we don’t: it feels terrific to have someone care for you.
It feels even better to be kind to others just for the sake of adhering to what you want to be, not to get something in return.

Be kind because its good for you, and because its good for someone else.

It's a beautiful day in God's world be sure to see the good.

I'm OK, You're OK

One of the first books that ever read was I'm OK, You're OK.  I wish I would have retained more of the message of the book, I might have enjoyed life a bit more.  But I read it when I was in 9th grade.

Anyway, my friends Dick and Mary gave me a book for Christmas.  On the back of the book is this poem:

You are invited to come home to
Y O U R S E L F.
To your radiance.  Your ritual.
Your courage.  Your clarity.
Your power.  Your purpose.
Your strength.  Your softness.
Your adaptability.  Your acceptance.
Your endurance.  Your excellence.
                         Elena Brower

I wonder what the world could be like if people just learned to like themselves.  If people could just believe that they are ok, and you are ok, and I am ok.

No more judgement, no more hatred, no more me vs you vs them.  Just kindness and grace.  For the sake of your happiness and that of others, please be ok.

You are ok.  Come home to yourself.

It's a beautiful day in God's world be sure to see the good.

Yacht life

I was on a cruise ship last week. We were parked in Nassau and I watched several large, cool yachts pass by.

For a moment I thought about the lives of those who own such boats. Wow!!!  How nice it would be to have a yacht. To sail where ever you wanted to go. To feel the pride of pulling into some port and know that you were all that. To have a room on your yacht to drink, to play pool, to sleep, to do whatever you wanted. Imagine being able to take all of your friends out.

I did some math. If a yacht costs $1,000,000 the payment would be over $4,000 a month which is totally impossible and out of the realm of possibility. Then there is the cost of insurance, fuel, and hiring a Captain and crew. Totally out of the question.

So I felt sad for a moment.

Then I thought about how many people that I know and people that I don’t know who can’t afford to go on a cruise as I was. I thought of people who don’t have health care. I thought of people who have never been to the dentist. I thought of people who don’t know where their next meal is coming from.

I stopped worrying about the yacht. I have nothing to complain about.

We have plenty in this life.

As my dad told me, and I have told my children many times, there will always be people that have more than you and people who have less.

Work hard in life, but no matter what your station, learn to be happy with what you have. Wanting more only brings suffering.

The Apostle Paul said, if you have food and clothes, be content.  1 Tim 6:8

How you treat people says everything

Its not that hard

I met some people from Wisconsin the other day. We got to talking about life. We got to talking about how people treat each other.

Don’t you know that how you treat other people says everything about who you are? I have met people that believe all of the "right things," but treat people poorly.  If we cannot love our brother whom we have seen, how can we say we love God, whom we have not seen?

It is not that hard. We are here to treat people with kindness. There is largely nothing more important than that. And, it is not that hard to be kind.

Make a determined effort to be kind to the first person that you see tomorrow. And then to the second and the third and the forth. Maybe get serious and write down their names so you will remember the next time you go into that business.   When we are kind to people, we make them happy, and we make ourselves happy too.

This is our purpose.  It is why we are here.  And thank God, it is not that hard.

It's a beautiful day in God's world be sure to see the good.

This is just good stuff

From my friend Pat...

My friends are dieing, or are sick with awful things. Its a season of life, and a not very desirable one. All my life I’ve assumed, whether I knew it or not, that certain people would always be there. I should have had an inkling when my brother then my Dad passed, or when my mom passed, but they were all “older” and it was understandable(my brother was 52, I was then 42-see how silly we are?)

But now my contemporaries are struggling or are gone. People who I came up with, went to college, raised kids, attended marriages, held hands through divorces and so on. We rode together and we were invincible. Life is not a gentle teacher.

Finding your own mortality creates a sort of focus that is lacking when you believe life goes on forever. Suddenly you are less tolerant of stupid things(political rhetoric, cruelty, phone menus) and much more interested in simple things(children’s laughter, coffee with a friend, most anything unexpectedly kind). I’ve always known these things, but with the passing of those around me, I really know them in a way I never did before.

I’m blessed with this experience called life, and I’m blessed with the opportunity to see what’s really important, and lasting. Perhaps you can get there faster than I did.

Merry Christmas

It's a beautiful day in God's world be sure to see the good.

Just because...

Just because...

Jesus was familiar with a number of religions. Besides his Judaism, he was surely exposed to Buddhism and Hinduism. They were around far before his birth. Do you remember the kings from the East? Probably Buddhists or Hindus or Zoroastrians. WOW!!! Kings from the east at Jesus Birth?

From the beginning of the story, "outsiders" are included!

Many ideas in Jesus’ teaching are also taught in other religions. Don’t worry? Buddhism. Find the stillness in your soul? Buddhism.

Just because an idea is from another religion, does not make it bad. And just because you learned an idea from your Christian Pastor or Christian Church does not make it right.

There is a lot of truth in this world that is outside the boundaries of what I was taught in my denomination. Remember, if Jesus is the way and the truth, then there is a bunch of truth out there that my Pastor never embraced that somehow is part of who Jesus is.

Just because it is not my idea, just because it comes from a “foreign” source does not make it bad or wrong. And just because your Methodist or Baptist pastor said it, does not make it right.

This is still God’s world and his thoughts are higher than ours.

When in doubt, follow the love.

It's a beautiful day in God's world be sure to see the good.

Don't Change

Don’t change...

We have been told our entire lives to change. Learn this, forget that. Do this, don’t do that. Go to church. Here is the list. Do it if you want to be a good person.

And the result is that we wake up in the morning and wonder just what we must do today to be loved. Change to be loved. Don’t change and you are rejected.

Poppycock. What if I just loved you, just the way that you are. Don’t change. You don’t have to . I love you and God loves you, just the way that you are.  Anyone who tells you otherwise has not met Grace.

Nothing new

The writer of Ecclesiastes says in 1:9 that there is nothing new under the sun. No new idea, no new thought. Everything that I have ever thought or written came from somewhere else. Maybe my parents, maybe Hubert Neth, maybe someone that I read… who knows? When I write, I always try to give credit, but sometimes it is impossible. Where did that idea come from? Who knows? Who remembers.

[by the way, I have made up a new word… plagiarism] [that’s a joke, son]

Back to the blog. Anything that you read here is not mine. Nothing is copyrighted. It all came from somewhere else. Take it if it helps you. Use it if it brings you peace. Share it if it can be a blessing. We are on a journey in this life together. When it comes to thoughts, there is no mine, there is only ours.

We should share more in this life.  Freely freely you have received, freely freely give.
When it comes to thoughts, nothing should be proprietary.
There is nothing new under the sun.

It's a beautiful day in God's world be sure to see the good.

It's a parade!

Last Sunday was the Annual Ft. Pierce Christmas Parade.  It was fun!  Fun people, fun times.
I think that sometimes we are too serious.  It is ok to let your hair down and have a little fun!

The First Methodist Crew.  Thanks to Chris, Kathy
and Peggy for all of the work organizing everything!

A color guard started it off

Greg and Betsy's Model -T

There were lots and lots of horses.
I saw some ponies too, but they could not talk.
Do you know why?
They were just a little hoarse.

The Grinch driving a tractor

Dogs dressed up

lots of people lined the route.  Everyone
was waving and yelling Merry Christmas!

One thing that I had never seen before was a drone in a
parade.  Everyone was very interested in it!

Police and Fire vehicles with sirens blazing.

Bag Pipers

Here comes the band

I love bands.  I played saxophone years ago

Christmas Tree and Judges table.
Our float won the prize for the most elves!

If you are having a down day, find a parade and go watch it!

It's a beautiful day in God's world be sure to see the good.

The Fire Maker

There was a man who invented
the art of making fire. He took his tools and went to a tribe in the
north, where it was very cold, bitterly cold. He taught the people
there to make fire. The people were very interested. He showed them
the uses to which they could put fire - they could cook, could keep
themselves warm, etc. They were so grateful that they had learned
the art of making fire. But before they could express their gratitude
to the man, he disappeared.

He wasn't concerned with getting their
recognition or gratitude; he was concerned about their well being. He
went to another tribe, where he again began to show them the value
of his invention.

People were interested there, too, a bit too interested for the peace
of mind of their priests, who began to notice that this man was
drawing crowds and they were losing their popularity. So they
decided to do away with him. They poisoned him, crucified him, put it
any way you like.

But they were afraid now that the people might
turn against them, so they were very wise, even wily. Do you know
what they did? They had a portrait of the man made and mounted it
on the main altar of the temple.

The instruments for making fire were
placed in front of the portrait, and the people were taught to revere
the portrait and to pay reverence to the instruments of fire, which
they dutifully did for centuries. The veneration and the worship went
on, but there was no fire.

End of the story.  Now some commentary...
How do we rekindle the fire in our hearts for the things of God?  By doing works of kindness, by showing love, by reaching out to others.  If the glow has ebbed from your life.  Reach for another human and show the love of God.  Don't settle for a life without fire.

It's a beautiful day in God's world be sure to see the good.

For those who cannot find their smile

Dear Lord, Dear Father,

This is a prayer for those who cannot find their smile...  Please help them to see not only the difficulty in life, but also the good.  Please help them to see that there is much more good than bad in this world.  Please help them not to react negatively when they are feeling down.  Please send them friends who can encourage them and help them to find their smile.  Lord we have all been up and we have all been down.  Please help us to see and focus on the good.  Please help us to understand that there are many things that are beyond our control.  We put these things into your hands.  We put our trust in you.

Thank you for all the good.  Thank you for family, for friends, for the sunrise, for the rain.  Thank you for breath in our lungs.  Thank you for music.  Thank you for food.  Thank you, thank you thank you.
Amen and Amen.

It's a beautiful day in God's world be sure to see the good.

3 simple rules

John Wesley offered 3 simple rules for living-
1.  Do no harm
2.  Do good
3.  Attend upon the ordinances of God.

The first two are self explanatory.  By the third, he meant that we should pray, go to worship, and participate in the sacraments.

Rule three has been interpreted over the years and now is more usually called "stay in love with God."

I have been thinking about preaching a sermon on these 3 rules.  But since I don't have a pulpit, I would have to preach it and put it on youtube or facebook video.  I am not sure that I am technical enough to do so.  Can you help me?

Anyway, today I am going to say a very few words about rule 1, do no harm.  Here I go...
The church needs to stop hurting people.  The church needs to stop using the bible to hurt people.  The church needs to stop judging people.  Far too many Christians are living a Christianity that is hurting other people.

Rule 1.  Do no harm.  It's not that hard.

Imagine all the good that would come if we eliminated all of the harm from the world.  Imagine the love that would float to the top if we just stopped hurting people.

Do no harm.

It's a beautiful day in God's world be sure to see the good.

God is in control

People say it all the time.  "God is in control."  I think they say this because it gives them some comfort in crazy times.  Times are crazy but God is in control.  I don't understand life, but God is in control.   Blah, blah, blah, but God is in control.

So do our choices mean nothing?  Are we puppets?

I am a big believer in free will.  I think that God loves our free will.  He must, he made us that way.

One person once told me that God is in control, but God is not controlling.  I actually like that.  It allows God to still be the big in charge God, but it makes room for our free will.

Next time someone says that God is in control, ask them, so do our choices mean nothing?  In my opinion, our choices matter a bunch and they are very valuable to us and to God.

It's a beautiful day in God's world be sure to see the good.

Amazon Vans

Suddenly these vans are everywhere

over 20,000 have been ordered

There are 8 of them in this picture that I took last week in Ft. Pierce.
Amazon rolled out a plan last year for entrepreneurs to lease these blue-gray vans and deliver for Amazon.  I am just noticing them in the last couple of months.

I don't know what I am thinking about this, except that it is a big change and I see so many of them.  Imagine how much money UPS and the US Postal Service has lost as Amazon rolled this out.  Imagine how much money Ford and Mercedes has made from this move.

I guess like most people, I am not fond of change.  Well I guess I am ok with change as long as it affects you and not me.

If you live near one of the distribution sites... Drive carefully!

paying attention

Some people don't pay attention to life.  They don't see things that they should see because they are not paying attention.  There was a clip on the news a few weeks ago where they interviewed people who drove past school buses with their stop signs out.  Many of the people said that they did not see the bus.

Not paying attention.

What would we see if we paid attention to life?  Here is an interesting thing that I saw the other day.  A bunch of big birds resting up on a tower.  They looked kind of gross, like vultures, but I guess God does not consider them gross.  He made them that way.

a person might drive by and not notice

there are a bunch of these birds hanging out

some of them spread their wings
 like they were warming themselves

What things do I walk by in life without seeing?  What people do I walk by in this life without seeing?

When we pay attention, life is interesting, and life is beautiful.

It's a beautiful day in God's world be sure to see the good.

What we want for Christmas part 2

From my friend Di....

I was talking to a friend the other day about what is important for Christmas and it reminded me of a Christmas about 6 years ago. We were spending it with our daughter's family and her in-laws. My husband and I decided, instead of buying expensive gifts and "stuff", we would get each of our grown children a small gift to open and then donate goats (to end world hunger) through Heifer International in their names. Well, the in-laws had 3 grown children and the gifts being exchanged Christmas morning, let me say that "in abundance" was inadequate to describe the scene. There were gifts everywhere. Then it was our family's turn to exchange gifts. The looks on the faces of the adult children, as well as the in laws, was priceless. All the commotion stopped and faces screwed up in confusion. My husband and I had a good laugh and then explained why they got "goats" for Christmas. We were pleased. After a while everyone was pleased. The Christmas spirit flowed in the room. As a result of that Christmas, gift giving is toned way down, and donations to charities in each others names are way up. The pressure is off for buying multiple gifts, and more emphasis is on the important thing: the manger. Joy to the World!

friends

I recently traveled to another town to do some handyman work.  I called ahead and stayed with some old friends.  Well, they are younger than I am, so they are not old, and I have not known them for all that long, but we are friends.

They said, of course come stay with us.  We went to dinner and stayed up and talked.  I slept in a nice bed and we visited in the morning.  The thing that I valued the most about the visit however, was the welcome.

Welcome is such a powerful thing.  We hear about people visiting churches and not feeling welcomed.  How sad.

We are all looking for connection in this life.
What do you, what do I do to welcome others into our lives?  Welcome begins with noticing people that might otherwise go unnoticed.  Seeing them, valuing them and then showing kindness.

May we all multiply the gift of welcome this day and every day.

It's a beautiful day in God's world be sure to see the good.

What do we want for Christmas?

When my parents were kids, they got nothing for Christmas.  On good years they would get some candy in their stocking, oh, and an orange.

When we were kids, our church gave out candy and fruit to the kids after service on Christmas Eve.  We were not impressed.  We had moved on.  We had candy around the house all the time.

When I was a kid, we wanted GI Joes and sports equipment.  I suppose that today's kids want electronic gadgets.

Now I am 62 years old.  Christmas is coming.  What do I want?

Why is that even a question?  When did Christmas become about what I want?  That is just wrong.  Christmas should only be about us giving thanks for God reaching down to the earth with a message of Good News.

But since I started with what do we/I want for Christmas, let me go there.  I really don't need anything.  I really don't want anything.  We are pretty fortunate and if I want a Ring doorbell, I guess we can buy one.  If I want to buy a new tool, I guess that I can.  I don't need anything for Christmas.

But what I would like, is to see my family and friends.  To look into their eyes and to tell them how much I love them.  Hugs and smiles all around.  That would make for a great Christmas.  Heck, that would make for a great day, any day.  Why not deliver a smile and a hug today.

It's a beautiful day in God's world be sure to see the good.

I can read you

I can read you.  Well, I can read some people.  Some I can't.

I can remember walking through the office area saying good morning and realizing that someone was hurting.  How do we read them?  Is it in their eyes?  The energy or lack thereof?  If I sensed that they were in distress, I would sit down with them, or I would go ask someone that was closer to them to go check up on them.

Last Sunday morning I was happy at church.  Everything was fine.  I was being my friendly self.  Then it happened.  Someone asked me, "you're not ok, something is going on."

Boom.  She read me.  Deep beneath the Sunday happy face was a sadness.  We had a brief but nice chat.  It was nice to be able to say a few words about feeling broken.

Do you read people?   Can you tell if someone is hurting?  Look at someone a bit longer... sense how they are.  Reach for them.  There are lots of people out there that need a hug.  They may be hurting behind the Sunday happy face.  Your care for them can mean so much.

It's a beautiful day in God's world be sure to see the good.

fixing broken things

When I was full time in ministry I was accused on occasion of not having a vision.  I guess that since we did not have a 1, 3, and 5 year strategic plan, some folks didn't think that we would be successful.

I took a different approach to vision and ministry.  I was never interested in strategic planning.  Instead,  I [we] focused on repairing the broken things.  The simple broken items of church culture and ministry that hold you back.  Like weights on a balloon, if you collect enough broken things, the balloon cannot fly.  Enough broken things and the organization, the individual, the anything can't fly.  But remove the restraints and watch something rise to its potential.

Broken things that I faced as a church leader included a myriad of things...

  • walls that needed paint
  • not enough parking
  • trees that needed to be trimmed
  • ineffective staff or volunteers
  • internal bickering
  • people focused on their preference instead of the mission
  • weak programs
  • there are hundreds of different kinds of broken things in an organization

All of these things will hold an organization back.  But work on them one at a time, and watch your organization begin to rise to the top.  But don't rest there, about the time the 8th thing gets fixed, the first thing comes apart again.  It is a constant struggle to keep the mechanisms well oiled and operational.

I had a staff person whose job over the years simply became "fix the broken things."  And they were very good at it.

Is your organization sinking?  Is your family sinking?  Is your self esteem in a rut?  Begin to focus on the one or two broken parts.  Fix them one at a time.  Watch yourself begin to rise to the joy of life.

It's a beautiful day in God's world be sure to see the good.

covering brokenness with grace

I received a very very nice email from my friend Jim.  One of the things that he talked about in his note was about how he was broken, yet tried to show grace and love.  All of that was in the same sentence...

I got to thinking... we are indeed all broken, and sometimes it hurts.  Sometimes we don't know what to say about it or what to do.  Some of it is not fixable.

But... but... but...

There is something that we can do.  In the midst of our brokenness, we can show grace and love.  We can take the focus off of ourselves and extend grace and love to others.  When we do this, at least for a few moments, we forget about our brokenness and pain.  We can't think about two things at the same time can we?

So, broken or not, lets show grace and love.  It may make us feel a little more whole.  And just think of how the recipient of our grace and love will feel.

It's a beautiful day in God's world be sure to see the good.

rivalries

Rivalries:

Alabama-Auburn
Florida-Florida State
KU-MU
Oklahoma-Texas
Baptist-Methodist
Catholic-Pentecostal
Conservative-Progressive
Chiefs-Raiders

Rivalries are fun in football, but they can get out of hand and become unhealthy very quickly.
Rivalries have no place in religion.

One of the interesting things about seeing an injury on the field of play is how the rivalry immediately ends.  The stands grow quiet, everyone watches to see if the player is moving his limbs.  The cart comes in to take the person off of the field.  We remember that we are first of all on the same team, the human team.

Then the cart leaves the field and the hatred continues.
It is ridiculous.

Sure I hope your team wins.  But really, who cares?  I hope everyone enjoys watching and playing the game.  But don't let your day or your week be ruined if it doesn't go the way that you want.

Several times over the years I was approached by a Pastor from another church who felt it necessary to tell me that his church was and would always be larger than mine.  Really?  who cares.   I hope everyone's church does well.  We must remember that when we come to religion, there is no room for tribal hatred.  We are all God's children and that puts us all on the same team.

Let us all treat one another like we are indeed from the same tribe and on the same team.

It's a beautiful day in God's world be sure to see the good.
