why do you believe?

I was listening to a podcast the other day and the author was explaining that people believe things for three reasons:  evidence, logic or community.

1.  evidence... they have seen the evidence

2.  logic - it seems logical to them

3.  community... someone else, a church member, the pastor, a friend, told you that it was logical or that there was evidence for the belief.

Unfortunately, in my mind, the worst reason to believe is also the most common... community... someone else told me, told us, that this is the right way to think.  Most humans never consider the logic of the thing and they usually never see the evidence.  We just drink the kool-aid that our parents and pastors fed us.

It is challenging to ask one's self the hard questions about our/my beliefs.  But it is also ok, more than ok, in fact I think that it is mandatory in a meaningful life, for us to question that which was handed down to us.

So why do you believe what you believe?  Logic, evidence, or community pressure?

It's a beautiful day in God's world, be sure to be the good.
