Tomorrow is the 4th of July, which brought this to mind. For
years I have gone on a camping and floating trip with some friends. A few years
ago a new tradition was introduced. Close to day’s end, as things begin to
settle down, we retire a flag that has served well but is ready to be destroyed
in a dignified manner. It is a
ceremony. One at a time we each take part of the flag and share words about those we
know and don’t know who have served as patriots in and out of uniform. The pieces are laid on the fire and as it burns we close
singing God Bless America then a moment of silence. It is a good and powerful feeling.
Happy Independence Day.
Thanks to those who have made this celebration possible.
Peace,
Lion’s Den Man
