forgiveness

We have all been hurt at one time or another.  When we are hurt, we usually need to tell someone.  We talk to a spouse, a friend, or a counselor.

Sometimes we keep telling the story of how we were hurt, over and over and over and over.

I think that it is important to engage in the practice of forgiveness.  I say practice because it is not always easy to forgive.  Here are some ideas that help me to forgive.

1.  Engage your brain actively in the process.  Be determined to work on forgiving.
2.  Consider why the person acted as they did.  Last time I was really hurt, the person thought they were doing the right thing.  Consider their motivation.
3.  Consider the brokenness of the person that hurt you.  Remember that everyone's behavior makes sense if you have enough information.
4.  Take a fearless moral inventory of your behavior.  Did you, did I do something that contributed to the situation.  Sometimes yes, sometimes no, but the question has to be asked.
5.  Keep working the process.  Give yourself time.  It takes time.

You know you are healing when you no longer feel the need to tell the story.  Stop telling the story about how you were hurt just as quickly as you can.  Digging it up only allows the wound to fester.  Find constructive things to think about and to talk about.

It's a beautiful day in God's world be sure to see the good.
