Idols of stone or wood are inferior representations for a God.  We tend to be repulsed by the idea that a God could be embodied in a stone or wood carving.  Idols of stone or wood do not hold or contain an adequate picture of who God is.

And so our ideas about God are just as bad.  Our ideas are idols as well.  They are inferior representations of God.  They may remind us of God, but our ideas do not hold, control or limit God.  Unless of course we confuse God with our ideas about God.

Just as God is bigger than an idol of stone, God is bigger than our ideas about him. Don't let your ideas become an idol. Let your mind be open to the infinite nature of God.

“As the heavens are higher than the earth,
so are my ways higher than your ways
and my thoughts than your thoughts. Is. 55:9
