Rembrandt's Prodigal Son [smug Elder son to the right] |
It is a thought about the Prodigal Sons. I am pretty sure Richard Rohr is the source for this thought. Prodigal sons, not son, but sons.
When we hear the story of the Prodigal, our brain tends to think that he is the bad one in the story and the Elder son is the good guy. But they both have it wrong. The Prodigal thinks that he is too bad to be loved by the Father. The Elder insists that he is good enough to be loved by the Father. Both wrong.
We are loved. Period. I love my kids so much. I welcome them, I hug them, whether they are being good or not. SO DOES GOD. There is no losing his love, and there is no earning his love. You are simply loved.
That my friend, is Good News!
It's a beautiful day in God's world, be sure to see the good.

I always related to the elder son. I used to think, yes, I am being good and would resent the younger son coming back and getting all this attention. That was when I was a baby christian. Now I realize I have been the younger son at times in my life. Wonderful lesson in this story.
