The ashes may wash off, but what God does in your heart is imprinted forever. It is with you every day that you are alive. It is the seal of the Holy Spirit. When you say "yes" to Jesus, the Holy Spirit comes and dwells within your heart.
You may resist him at times. You may run away for a while. You will still make many mistakes, but the seal or mark of the Holy Spirit remains imprinted on your soul.
You can run, but you can't hide. He is with you every day, pursuing you, wooing you, courting you. You can sense his leading in your heart. Stop resisting. Give up. Let his love fill you and lead you.
The ashes of ash Wednesday may wash off, but you are tatooed permanently with the seal of the Holy Spirit. Awaken to who you are in Christ.
