It's not a matter of "if"

One of my kids mentioned that they did not want to lose me.  They did not want me to die.

Well, let's just put the reality out there.  It is not a matter of if, it is a matter of when.  Every child will see their parents die unless the unthinkable happens, and that is when a parent outlives a child.

I know that children do not want to think about this. But it is coming, and it can come in many ways.
  • a terminal illness
  • an accident
  • a stroke or heart attack
  • a languishing in a care center

Neither of my parents wanted to be a burden to us children.  They both got their wish.  Mom died of cancer at 62.  Dad died of a heart attack, suddenly, in the parking lot of his favorite restauratnt.  He was 75.

It is not a matter of if.  It is a matter of when.  And so my advice is this:  spend more time with your parents.  Change your schedule... go see them.  You will be glad that you did.

And conversely, to we who are parents... spend more time with your children.  The most beautiful part about being alive is spending time with those that you love...

It's a beautiful day in God's world, be sure to see the good.
